The Yangs of Hongnong: A Legacy of Integrity
Main lineage: From the Ji surname, descendants of the royal house of Zhou, enfeoffed at the state of Yang (near present-day Hongtong, Shanxi); later generations took the state as their surname.
A clan of many sources: Includes branches changed from ethnic-minority surnames.
Root points: Hongtong in Shanxi and Huayin in Shaanxi (Hongnong).
▸ Internal migration: Early on the clan was in the northwest and the Central Plains; the Wei–Jin southward migration took it to Jiangnan; the Tang and Song brought it to Fujian and Guangdong; the Ming and Qing saw dispersal via the Hongtong Great Pagoda Tree and the filling of Sichuan from Huguang.
▸ Overseas branches: Yangs of southern Fujian, Chaoshan, and the Hakka went to the Nanyang during the Ming and Qing.
