A Surname Born of the Bow, Spread Across the Globe
Main lineage: Tradition names Hui, a grandson of the Yellow Emperor, as the founding ancestor. As master bowmaker (gongzheng) he crafted the bow and arrow and was granted the surname Zhang.
A clan of many sources: Other branches include those changed from the Ji surname and from ethnic minorities.
Root point: Qinghe in Hebei is the recognized ancestral seat of the Zhang clan.
▸ Internal migration: The clan arose in North China and early on spread through the Central Plains; the Jin-era southward migration took it to Jiangnan; the Tang and Song brought it to Fujian and Guangdong; the Ming and Qing saw large numbers of Zhangs in the Hongtong migration, the Huguang–Sichuan resettlement, and the trek to the Northeast.
▸ Overseas branches: Zhangs of southern Fujian, Chaoshan, and the Hakka went to the Nanyang in search of livelihoods throughout the Ming and Qing.
